A home heating oil tank gauge typically shows the amount of heating oil remaining in the tank.
Gauges are meant to give you an idea of how much oil is left in your oil tank, not an exact measurement
The Gauge is Located on the top of the heating oil tank and is clear plastic tube with markings on it, read from the bottom of the floating indicator.

The 275-gallon vertical heating oil tank is the most common oil tank. The tank is usually filled to a maximum of 240 to 255 gallons (leaving about 6 inches from the top for expansion)
